Power Supply and Delivery surcharges explained:

  • Power Supply: This charge includes costs associated with generating the electricity and moving it through high voltage transmission lines. The rates you pay for Power Supply are directly related to the amount of electricity you use, which is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Usage above an average of 17 kWh per day is charged a higher power supply rate.
  • Delivery: This charge has two main components. The first is a fixed price of $8.50 per month, which covers costs associated with metering and billing. The second is a Distribution Charge that varies based on the amount of kWh you use. It covers the cost to deliver the electricity we generate through our power lines to your home.

Please note: The base residential electric service rate will change to Time of Day 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. in March 2023.

Our residential Time-Of-Day Electric Rate may help you reduce your overall energy costs. You can save money and energy by shifting some of your electricity usage to off-peak hours early mornings, evenings and weekends.

Here's how it works

This special rate is available to residential customers who choose to have their energy usage metered based on our On- and Off-Peak hours.

On-peak hours:  11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Off-peak hours:  7 p.m. to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, and all day Saturday and Sunday.

Maximize Your Time-Of-Day Rate

Here are some tips to help you save energy and money:

  • Request a DTE Energy Bridge to discover sources of your energy waste in real time.
  • Operate your dishwasher and your laundry appliances after 7 p.m. or on the weekends.
  • Turn off lights and electronics, such as TVs and computer equipment when you're not using them, especially during peak hours.
  • Increase the temperature of your home on workdays during the summer.
  • Shower or bathe between 7 p.m. and 11 a.m. if you have an electric water heater.
  • Monitor your energy use with the DTE Insight App to understand when you use the most energy, and to plan your usage patterns accordingly.

*Rates shown are representative of both capacity, non-capacity and distribution charge.

To learn more about our Time-Of-Day Electric Rate, or to enroll, simply call 800.477.4747. Please note that a 12-month commitment is required to select this rate.

DPP is a tiered rate that allows customers with flexible energy consumption patterns to save money on their bill.

By shifting your home energy usage to Off-Peak hours (11 p.m. – 7 a.m. Monday – Friday, and all day long on weekends and holidays), you reduce energy costs.

During times of extremely high demand for electricity, like a heat wave for example, a Critical Peak Event may be called. During an event, the cost of electricity rises, and customers are encouraged to reduce their energy use. DTE will always notify you by email, phone or text message at least 6 hours prior to an event.

Prices per kilowatt hour listed are rounded to the nearest cent. Rates shown are representative of power supply capacity, non-capacity and distribution charges, and do not include applicable surcharges or taxes. Rates may change by Michigan Public Service Commission order.

Three key actions you can take to save during Critical Peak Events:
  • Pre-cool your home. During summer months, take advantage of Off-and Mid-Peak times by running your air conditioner before 3 p.m. and allow the temperature to rise during On-Peak times.
  • Wait to do laundry or run the dishwasher. Shift activities like doing your laundry and running your dishwasher to Off-Peak times. The weekend is a great time to catch up on these chores.
  • Avoid or minimize the use of your appliances and electronics with large energy needs during On-Peak times. Unplug charges and use smart strips to completely power down TVs and other electronics.
  • Keep your alert preferences up-to-date to ensure you receive your Critical Peak Event alert.

The more electricity usage you shift to Off-Peak times, the more money you can save!

To enroll in the Dynamic Peak Pricing rate:

  • You must have an active AMI meter.
  • If you are already on or add a separately metered electric service, tariff or rate program, other than Rider 18 (if available), or if you participate in another DTE billing program like BudgetWise Billing, you are not eligible for Dynamic Peak Pricing at this time.

Call 855.836.6707 to enroll today.

Please note that as part of the Dynamic Peak Pricing Rate enrollment agreement, you must remain on the rate for 12 months.

Designated holidays:
New Year's Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day.

The Time-of-Day option offers a lower energy price during Off-Peak hours, 16 hours on weekdays and all weekend hours. You save when you shift most of your energy use to Off-Peak Hours instead of higher rate, On-Peak hours (Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m).

It's important to note that the Geothermal Rate is seasonal. This means the price you pay during the summer (June through September) is different than the price during the winter (October through May). The rate structure translates into an average of 25% less when compared to the standard residential rate and an average of 35% less when compared to the general business rate.

Geothermal Benefits

Economical
Everyday, geothermal systems save home and business owners 30 to 60 percent on their heating or cooling costs.

Environmentally friendly
No fuel, no emissions. Take advantage of the organic energy stored in the earth.

Value
Not only does a geothermal system assist with heating and cooling, it also contributes to water heating.

Efficient
Geothermal systems are as much as four times more efficient than conventional systems.

To enroll in the Geothermal Rates:

  • Begin the process by emailing nbrequest@dteenergy.com to verify that your geothermal equipment is compatible with our program. If not, other equipment may need to be installed.
  • Have wiring installed by a licensed, independent electrical contractor to accommodate a separate D1.7 geothermal advanced meter.

Find a local contractor for geothermal installations nearest you at Michigan Geothermal Energy Association or visit our Geothermal webpage to learn more.

To qualify for a Geothermal Rate, your home or business must have a geothermal ground source heat pump system. A split system with a natural gas, propane or oil booster is also eligible if the geothermal heat pump is designed to operate at least 80 percent of the time.

Note: Air source heat pumps do not qualify for this program. However, you may qualify for another rate plan, such as the D1.1 CoolCurrents® rate.

If you use a central air conditioner or air source heat pump, then you're eligible for CoolCurrents® our interruptible space conditioning rate designed to help reduce your cooling costs and, for air source heat pump participants, the heating costs on your energy bill while keeping you feeling comfortable.

Here's how it works

Getting started is easy. First, you'll need to hire an electrician to wire your central air conditioner or air source heat pump for a separate smart meter. See the CoolCurrents FAQs for details. Next, call us at 800.477.4747 to schedule installation of a smart meter and a small device to control your air conditioning.

On select summer days, DTE will briefly interrupt your air conditioning or heat pump in 15-minute intervals by sending a signal to the device. Your air conditioning or heat pump cycling will be limited to no more than eight hours in a 24-hour period and no more than 30 minutes per hour. You'll know that your service has been interrupted when the red light on your device is lit.

CoolCurrents has a monthly service charge of $1.95 from June through October (regardless of usage). However, this special rate program can help participating customers save up to 17% on their cooling costs. Additionally, customers who use a whole home air source heat pump can save up to 35% in the heating months.

Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps qualify for the D1.1 CoolCurrents® rate, helping you to save even more. They use electricity to transfer energy between indoor and outdoor air. Because they move heat rather than generate heat, these systems consume far less electricity than electric furnaces, baseboard heaters or space heaters.

DTE Energy does not sell or install air source heat pump systems. Visit our Energy Efficiency Directory to find a contractor near you. Select "Heat Pump Replacement" to find contractors that sell and install air source heat pumps.

Help us help your community

By enrolling in CoolCurrents, you'll help us provide more reliable service to all customers on days when the demand for electricity is high. You will also be contributing to our CleanVision goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Let’s work together to make Michigan a cleaner, better environment for future generations.
