SmartCurrents™ helps lower your electricity bill by combining the benefits of a smart thermostat with a dynamic electric rate. The thermostat and electric rate work together automatically to help you save on heating and cooling costs. We offer this program to help our customers save energy and money, and to reduce electric load on the grid when demand is very high.

How it works
  • Get a free ecobee3 lite Smart Thermostat - $169 value. Install this Wi-Fi enabled thermostat yourself in as little as 15 minutes, or receive free, in-person installation from a professional.
  • Receive the Dynamic Peak Pricing rate.  On this rate, the cost of electricity varies by time of day, with Off-Peak hours at night and on weekends costing half as much as the standard rate.
  • Enjoy new ways to save on electricity costs:

Shift energy use to Off-Peak times. Use large electric appliances, like the washing machine and dishwasher, during the hours when electricity rates are lowest. Weekends are a great time to catch up on these household chores.

Save automatically. During Critical Peak hours, your thermostat will increase the temperature by 4 degrees to help you save on A/C costs. You can always adjust your thermostat during these events.

SmartCurrents participants have the Dynamic Peak Pricing rate. Shifting your energy use to Off-Peak hours whenever possible could help lower your electricity costs.

Dynamic Peak Pricing Rate
Save with this rate by shifting your energy use to lower priced times of the day, including nights and weekends.
Off-Peak Times
During Off-Peak weekday hours (11 p.m. to 7 a.m.), plus all day on Saturday, Sunday and designated holidays, electricity costs are the lowest.
Mid-Peak Times
During Mid-Peak weekday hours (7 a.m. to 3 pm. and 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.), electricity costs are about the same as for customers on DTE’s Standard Residential Electric Rate.
On-Peak Times
During On-Peak hours or times when demand for energy is greatest (3 p.m. to 7 p.m.), electricity costs are higher.
Critical Peak Events
During times of extremely high demand for electricity, a Critical Peak Pricing (CPP) event may be called. During an event, the cost of electricity rises to 95¢ per kWh.

You will be notified by 6 p.m., one day before the CPP event. The events only occur on weekdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and are limited to a maximum of 14 occurrences (56 hours) per calendar year.

5 Ways to Save During Critical Peak Events
  1. Keep your notification preferences up-to-date to ensure you receive your day-ahead notification. To update your contact information, call 855.836.6707.
  2. Pre-cool your home. During summer months, take advantage of Off and Mid-Peak times by running your air conditioner before 3 p.m. and allow the temperature to rise during On-Peak times. Close blinds and drapes, especially on sunny days.
  3. Shift activities like doing your laundry and running the dishwasher to Off-Peak times and on the weekend. The more electricity usage you shift to Off-Peak times, the more money you can save.
  4. Avoid or minimize use of appliances and electronics with large energy needs during On-Peak times. Unplug chargers. Use smart strips to completely power down TVs and other electronics.
  5. Download the free DTE Insight app with an Apple or Android device. Use the app to better understand how your household uses energy.

CoolCurrents® is our interruptible air conditioning rate that can help you save on your summer air conditioning bill. If you use a central air conditioner or air source heat pump, then you’re eligible for this special rate. CoolCurrents is designed to help you control your summer energy bills and keep you feeling cool and comfortable.

How it works

Before enrolling, you’ll need to hire an electrician to wire your central air conditioner or air source heat pump for a separate smart meter. See the CoolCurrents® FAQs for details. Then, call us at 800.477.4747 to schedule installation of a smart meter and a small wireless device to control your air conditioning.

On select summer days, DTE Electric will briefly interrupt your air conditioning in 15-minute intervals by sending a signal to the wireless device. The air conditioning cycling is limited to no more than 8 hours in a 24-hour period and no more than 30 minutes per hour. You’ll know that your service is interrupted when the red light on your device is lit.

CoolCurrents has a monthly service charge of $1.95 from June through October (regardless of usage), but this rate program may provide participating customers with a savings off your normal air conditioning bill.

Additional Benefits
CoolCurrents helps us provide more reliable service to all customers on days when the demand for electricity is high.

CoolCurrents Load Control Device Upgrade Program
DTE Energy is replacing the current Radio Control Units (RCUs) with new, state of the art equipment Load Control Devices (LCDs). The new LCD will be approximately the same size as the current device and will provide increased functionality. See the CoolCurrents FAQs for more information, including customer qualification requirements.

Geothermal Rates

Our Geothermal Rate provides two ways to save on the heating and cooling portion of your energy bill.

First, the Time-of-Day option offers a lower energy price during off-peak hours while increasing the price during on-peak hours. On-peak hours are Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Off-peak hours apply all other times.

Second, the Geothermal Rate is seasonal. This means the price you pay during the summer (June through September) is different than your price during the winter (October through May).

To qualify, your home or business must have:

A geothermal ground source heat pump system, or a split system with a natural gas, propane or oil booster, if the geothermal heat pump is designed to operate at least 80 percent of the time.

To enroll in the Geothermal Rate:

  • Contact one of our service planners to verify that your geothermal equipment is compatible with our program. If not, other equipment may need to be installed.
  • Have wiring installed by a licensed, independent electrical contractor to accommodate a separate geothermal advanced meter.

Air source heat pumps do not qualify for this rate. However, you may qualify for another rate program.

Call us at 800.477.4747 before purchasing an air source heat pump or to request installation of the separately-metered geothermal advanced meter.

Onsite Electric Generation

Programs for customers with rooftop solar or private generation are described below:

  • Distributed Generation Program Rider No. 18 - This rate applies to all customers who generate a portion or all their own electricity with an eligible electric generator using a renewable energy resource and who submitted interconnection applications after May 9, 2019 with projects no larger than 150 kW. (Methane digester generation projects as large as 550 kW may participate.)
  • Distributed Generation Rider No. 14  -This rate is available to residential and commercial customers with onsite distributed generation of no more than 100 kW who wish to operate in parallel with the DTE Electric system.
  • Small Power-Producing Facilities Standard Contract Rider No. 6 - Rider No. 6 is available to most customers, including residential customers, who develop small power-producing facilities and sell electricity to DTE Electric. To qualify for this rider, the customer must obtain qualifying status from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
  • Net Metering Rider No.16 - DTE Electric is no longer enrolling customers for the Net Metering program as of May 9, 2019. By law, current Net Metering customers will remain in this program for ten years from the date of their property’s initial enrollment and will be transitioned to the Distributed Generation Program Rider No. 18 upon reaching their service anniversary.
  • For more information see Rooftop Solar and Private Generation.
Outdoor Protective Lighting

The Outdoor Protective Lighting (OPL) Rate is a supplemental rate that is used for security lighting. Once enrolled in this rate program, we’ll install lighting where service is already available, to illuminate a designated portion of your private property. A number of specific terms and conditions apply to this rate.

OPL Rate Conditions

  • You are currently using electric service under one of our standard metered rates.
  • We install, own, operate and maintain the lighting.
  • Your contract is for 5 years of service. If you terminate early, the remaining balance of the contract is due.
  • Your dusk to dawn service is controlled by photo-sensitive devices that provide service all night, every night (approximately 4,200 hours per year).
  • For more information see Outdoor Lighting.
Plug-in Electric Vehicle Rate

This rate plan requires an additional meter to be installed at your home. This meter will be dedicated solely to your EV charger. The additional meter will allow you to take advantage of reduced energy costs for your EV Monday through Friday from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m., and all weekend. The EV Plan is beneficial if your home's current electrical panel does not have capacity for the additional load required by a Level 2 charger. This plan is typically not beneficial for those with a Level 1 charger.

Contact DTE at 734.213.9877 to switch to the EV plan.

Residential Electric Service

If you’re a residential customer, you are most likely on the Residential Electric Service Rate.

As a residential customer, other surcharges may vary on your bill: Power Supply and Delivery.

  • Power Supply: This charge includes costs associated with generating the electricity and moving the electricity over high voltage transmission lines. The rates you pay for Power Supply are directly related to the amount of electricity you use, which is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Usage above an average of 17 kWh per day is charged a higher power supply rate.

  • Delivery: This charge has two main components. The first is a fixed price of $7.50 per month, which covers costs associated with metering and billing. The second is a Distribution Charge that varies based on the amount of kWh you use. It covers the cost to deliver the electricity we generate over our poles and wires to your home.

Senior Citizen Credit

As of December 17, 2015, DTE Electric customers age 65 and over are eligible for a monthly credit of $3.75.

  • There is no kWh usage requirement to qualify.
  • The senior credit means a savings of $45.00 per year.
  • To sign-up for the Senior Citizen Credit, call 800.477.4747.
Time-Of-Day Electric Rate

You could reduce your overall energy costs by requesting DTE Energy’s residential Time-Of-Day Electric Rate. The more you shift your electricity usage to off-peak hours — early mornings, evenings and weekends — the more you could save.

How It Works
This rate is available to residential customers who choose to have their energy usage metered based on our on and off-peak hours.

On-peak hours:  11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Off-peak hours:  7 p.m. to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, and all day Saturday and Sunday.

Maximize Your Time-Of-Day Rate
Here are some additional tips to help you save energy and money.

  • Monitor your energy use with the DTE Energy Insight app to understand when you use the most energy, and to plan your usage patterns accordingly. You can also request a DTE Energy Bridge to discover sources of your energy waste in real time.
  • Operate your dishwasher and your laundry appliances after 7 p.m. or on the weekends.
  • Turn off lights and electronics, such as televisions and computer equipment when when you're not using them, especially during peak hours.
  • Increase the temperature of your home on workdays during the summer.
  • Shower or bathe between 7 p.m. and 11 a.m if you have an electric water heater.

Water Heating Service Rate

The Water Heating Service Rate can help you save on the water heating portion of your bill by allowing us to temporarily interrupt electricity to your water heater for up to four hours per day. This short interruption helps DTE provide reliable service on days when the demand for electricity is high.

To participate, you must have a separately metered circuit to which no other load except water heating can be connected.

  • You will need to have a licensed electrician supply and install the necessary meter enclosure, an AC-10 box, wiring, and any other necessary equipment. You may also need to receive approval of inspection for the electrical work from your city. Upon completion of the work, DTE will install a separate advanced meter and Load Control Device.
  • The cost to install the equipment necessary to separately meter the water heater usage will be provided by your licensed electrician.
  • When your water heating wiring is complete, call us at 800.477.4747 to schedule the installation of the advanced meter.
