Whether you’re ready to start natural gas service or are considering a switch to natural gas, DTE Energy is the smart choice in areas across Michigan to help meet your energy needs. As a matter of fact, DTE Energy's natural gas utility is one of the nation's largest, safely delivering natural gas to 1.2 million Michigan families and businesses in over 500 communities. Furthermore, natural gas is the ideal energy source. Not only is it safe, reliable and economical, it’s also the cleanest burning of all the fossil fuels.

The Benefits of DTE Energy Natural Gas

Economical
On average, natural gas is half to one third the cost of other fuel sources. You can save even more with ENERGY STAR® natural gas appliances.

Environmentally Friendly
Natural gas is the most environmentally friendly fossil fuel. It burns cleaner than other fuel sources, with fewer pollutants and no mercury.

Convenient
Many household appliances run on natural gas, including water heaters, furnaces, clothes dryers, ranges, grills, fireplaces, patio heaters and more.
Proven Technology
Natural gas has been a safe, cost-effective technology for lighting, cooking and heating since the 19th century.

Domestically Produced
About 85 percent of the natural gas used in the U.S. is produced in our country, with the remaining majority from Canada. Both countries have abundant supplies of natural gas.

Local Resource
Michigan has one of the largest natural gas deposits in the US, enabling DTE to deliver clean, homegrown, affordable energy to residents.

Start DTE Energy Natural Gas Service

Beginning DTE Energy natural gas service is as easy as a phone call or email. Your DTE Energy representative can verify you that live in an eligible area. If you are switching to natural gas from liquid propane, your DTE Energy representative can provide an estimated cost for installation of a service line and meter (if needed).

Know Your Own Power, Natural Gas

What is natural gas?
Natural gas is a fossil fuel, a naturally occurring hydrocarbon compound that’s almost entirely methane (although it does contain small amounts of other gases). As plant layers decompose deep under the earth’s surface, they are exposed to heat and pressure. The resulting natural gas accumulates in reservoirs of porous rock deep underground.

Cleaner source of energy
Natural gas is the cleanest burning of all fossil fuels. When it’s extracted from the ground, a small amount of pollutants are removed before it enters the gas supply. As it burns its blue flame produces water and carbon dioxide.

Where does natural gas I use come from?
The United States is major producer of natural gas, helping to fuel our homes and economy. In fact, 85 percent of the natural gas used in our country is produced in the US. The rest we import from Canada through pipelines or by ship (as liquefied natural gas).

Easy to extract
Natural gas production doesn’t disturb the surrounding area as it is extracted. Sites are quickly restored to their original state once production ends.

Locating natural gas reserves
Check out the advanced technology we use to find and extract natural gas from the earth.

Magnetic Measurement

Magnetic measurement determines the magnetic field of base rock to calculate how much sediment is lying above it.

Satellite Imagery

Satellite imagery identifies surface structures and patterns that aid in the search for probable underlying hydrocarbon deposits.

Gravity Mapping

Gravity Mapping gauges the thickness of the basin or sedimentary rock layer and helps identify base rock topography.

Seismic Sound Wave Reflection

Seismic Sound Wave Reflection measures the time to various rock units that reflect acoustic energy.

Unconventional Sources of Natural Gas

In the US alone, it’s estimated there are trillions of cubic feet of potentially recoverable natural gas resources in “unconventional sources.” This included low permeability tight sandstones, gas shales and coal be methane formations.

Not only does this expand our reservoirs, it benefits everyone in other ways. For instance, our DTE Methane Resources subsidiary produces 12 million cubic foot per day of pipeline quality gas from coal bed methane formations. The harmful greenhouse gases destroyed by this project are equal to the carbon removed from the atmosphere by more than 210,000 acres of pine forests.
