CoolCurrents® is our interruptible air conditioning rate that can save you up to 17% on your summer air conditioning bill. If you use a central air conditioner or air source heat pump, then you’re eligible for this special rate. CoolCurrents is designed to help you control your summer energy bills and keep you feeling cool and comfortable.

How it works

Before enrolling, you’ll need to hire an electrician to wire your central air conditioner or air source heat pump for a separate advanced meter. Then, call us at 800.477.4747 to install the advanced meter and provide a small wireless device to control your air conditioning.

On select summer days, DTE Electric will briefly interrupt your air conditioning in 15-minute intervals by sending a signal to the device. The air conditioning cycling is limited to no more than 8 hours in a 24 hour period. You’ll know that your service is interrupted when the red light on your device is lit.

CoolCurrents has a monthly service charge of $1.95 from June through October (regardless of usage), but this rate program may provide participating customers with a savings of up to 17% off your normal air conditioning bill.

CoolCurrents Load Control Device Upgrade Program
DTE Energy is replacing the current Load Control Devices (LCD) with new, state of the art equipment. The new LCD will be the same size as the current device and will provide the same functionality. See the linked FAQ for more information.

The Dynamic Peak Pricing (DPP) Rate allows you to save money by simply shifting your energy usage. The rate is open to residential, secondary commercial, and industrial customers who have an advanced meter installed.

Pilot Study Results
During a pilot study that spanned 17 months, participants reduced their energy cost by an average of 10%. By taking an active role in managing your energy use, you have the opportunity to save money — how much you save depends on the choices you make.

How it works
The DPP rate is made possible by advanced meters, which measure and report energy use on an hourly basis. This rate better reflects the true cost of generating and supplying electricity throughout the day.

On-Peak and Critical Peak Periods
You pay more for energy during Critical Peak and On-Peak times, when supply is tighter and demand is highest.

Mid-Peak Periods
During Mid-Peak hours, you pay about the same as other customers who are on the Standard Residential Electric Rate.

Off-Peak Periods
During Off-Peak weekday hours, plus all day Saturday and Sunday and designated holidays, you pay less than other customers. The DPP Rate allows you to save money when you shift your electric usage to these times.
 

*Designated holidays: New Year’s Day, Labor Day, Good Friday, Thanksgiving Day, Memorial Day, Christmas Day, Independence Day.

Critical Peak Events
During times of extremely high demand for electricity, a Critical Peak Pricing (CPP) event may be declared. Customers will be notified by 6 p.m. a day in advance of the Critical Peak event. Events will only occur on weekdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and are limited to a maximum of 20 occurrences (80 hours) per calendar year. During CPP events, the power supply cost of electricity rises from 13.99¢ per kWh to 95¢ per kWh.

With advance planning, you can easily prevent a higher energy bill when CPP events are called. Simple ideas include:

  • Ensure your notification information is up to date so that you know when CPP events are announced. To verify or update your contact information, call our Contact Center, 855.836.6707. Our customer service representatives are available Mon – Fri, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sat, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to assist you.
  • Make a list ahead of time of the actions your household will take to reduce energy use, then post it in a common area of your home.

5 Ways to save during Critical Peak events

  1. Keep your notification preferences up-to-date to make sure you receive your day-ahead notification. To update your contact information, call 855.836.6707.
  2. Make an action plan to reduce energy use during Critical Peak events. For instance, pre-charge laptops so they run on batter power during events.
  3. Avoid or minimize use of big energy draw appliances and electronics during Critical Peak events. Manage small appliances, too. Unplug chargers. Use smart strips to completely power down TVs and other electronics.
  4. Pre-cool the house during lower cost periods. Let the temp drift up over the Critical Peak period. Close blinds and drapes, especially on sunny days, to avoid solar heat gain. Remember Critical Peak events only last four hours, 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  5. Download the free DTE Insight app with an Apple or Android device. Use the app to better understand how your household uses energy. This will help determine if you need to take additional actions the next time a Critical Peak event occurs.

Our Geothermal Rate provides two ways to save up to 50% off the heating and cooling portion of your energy bill.

First, the Time-of-Day option offers a lower energy price during off-peak hours while increasing the price during on-peak hours. On-peak hours are Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and off-peak hours apply all other times.

Second, the Geothermal Rate is seasonal. This means the price you pay during the summer (June through September) is different than your price during the winter (October through May).

To qualify, your home or business must have:

A geothermal ground source heat pump system, or a split system with a natural gas, propane or oil booster, if the geothermal heat pump is designed to operate at least 80% of the time.

To enroll in the Geothermal rate:

  • Contact one of our service planners to verify that your geothermal equipment is compatible with our program. If not, other equipment may need to be installed.
  • Have wiring installed by a licensed, independent electrical contractor to accommodate a separate geothermal advanced meter.

Air source heat pumps do not qualify for this rate. However, you may qualify for another rate program

Enrollment Options.

  • Kilowatt-Hour Block Enrollment -( $2.50/month)
    This option enables you to choose a participation level that is right for you and your budget. You can purchase a “block” of 100-kilowatt hours of renewable energy for $2.50 per month. This monthly cost is in addition to your normal monthly electric charges.
  • 100% Match
    This option enables you to match 100 percent of your monthly electric consumption for 2 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh). The monthly cost is based on the amount of kilowatt-hours used each month, and is in addition to your normal monthly electric charges.

Note: All customers are required to pay the full applicable renewable energy surcharge necessary to facilitate compliance with Michigan’s energy portfolio standard. Your GreenCurrents® charge is in addition to the renewable energy portfolio charge

Customers with on-site generation have several rate options to choose from. Please read the rates below and select the most applicable rate for your customer generation application.

  • Net Metering Rider No. 16 - The most utilized rate option for renewable generation with capacity of 20kW or less. For this class of projects, termed category 1, the customer is billed by the company under his standard rate (e.g. Rate Schedule D1 - Residential Service Rate, Rate Schedule D3 - General Service Rate and Rate Schedule D6 - Primary Supply Rate) for any positive value of inflow less outflow. The customer is eligible to receive full retail power supply and delivery credit for any energy sent to the utility (positive values of outflow less inflow), that can offset energy provided by the utility in subsequent months.
  • Standard Contract Rider No. 6 - Small Power-producing Facilities - Rider 6 is available to most customers, including residential customers, who develop small power-producing facilities and sell electricity to DTE Electric. To qualify for this rider, the customer must obtain qualifying status from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
  • Standard Contract Rider No. DG - Distributed Generation - Available to residential and commercial customers with onsite distributed generation of no more than 100 kW who wish to operate in parallel with the DTE Electric system.
  • If you are considering becoming a net metering customer and any of the below situations apply to you, please contact DTE Energy at 313.235.4333 as special conditions may apply to your net metering application which will effect the pricing of your service:
    • If you are currently taking service pursuant to a rate based on time-of-day (on-peak and off-peak) and/or season (rate dependent on month) or plan to change to these type of services in the future.
    • If you are considering net metering and are currently taking service pursuant to multiple rates at a single site, or plan to take service pursuant to multiple rates at a single site at some point in the future.

The Outdoor Protective Lighting (OPL) Rate is a supplemental rate that is used for security lighting. Once enrolled in this rate program, we’ll install lighting, usually on our utility poles,that illuminate a designated portion of your private property. A number of specific terms and conditions apply to this rate.

OPL Rate Conditions

  • You are currently using electric service under one of our standard metered rates.
  • We install, own, operate and maintain the lighting.
  • Your contract is for 5 years of service. If you terminate early, the remaining balance of the contract is due.
  • Your dusk to dawn service is controlled by photo-sensitive devices, that provide service every night and all night for approx. 4,200 hours per year.

The charges listed below do not include applicable surcharges, credits, taxes, additional credits or fees based on lamp type, quantity, date or conditions of installation.

Charge your electric vehicle during off-peak hours—overnight or on the weekend—and save up to 40% off of your residential rate.

The Plug-in Electric Vehicle Rate (D1.9) requires the installation of a separate advanced meter and a Level 2 Electric Vehicle charger and is limited to 5,000 customers.

Choose your Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV) Rate option:

  • $45.65 per month, per vehicle
  •  Limited to 250 customers

**The fixed monthly Flat Rate is charged regardless of the amount of energy consumed by the electric vehicle during the billing period.

Requirements

  • To get a PEV advanced meter, you must have correct wiring, a level 2 charger and meter enclosure installed by a licensed, independent electrical contractor.

  • You also need to receive approval of inspection for the electrical work from your city and provide documentation of passed inspection prior to installation of the advanced meter.

If you’re a residential customer you are most likely on the Residential Electric Service Rate.

As a residential customer, you have two types of charges on your electric bill: Power Supply and Delivery.

  • Power Supply: This charge includes cost associated with generating the electricity and moving the electricity over high voltage transmission lines. The rates you pay for Power Supply are directly related to the amount of electricity you use, which is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh).

  • Delivery: This charge includes two main components: A fixed price of $6.00 per month, which covers costs associated with metering and billing. Second, a Distribution Charge which will vary based on the amount of kWh you use, that covers the cost to deliver the electricity we generate over our poles and wires to your home..

  • Other surcharges may vary on your bill.

As of December 17, 2015 DTE Electric customers ages 65 and up (that are head of household) are now eligible for a $3.00 monthly credit under the Residential Electric Service Rate.

  • There is no kWh usage requirement to qualify and the senior credit means a savings of $36.00 per year.
  • This rate provides Senior Citizens a discount compared to our non-senior customers the Residential Electric Service Rate
  • To sign-up for the Senior Citizen Credit, call 1.800.477.4747 and use the following prompts.  Select "1" for Residential Service, "3" for Billing and Payments, "4" for Billing and Payment Programs, and then "2" for Payment Assistance Programs.

 

  • If you use most of your electricity in the evening, early morning and/or weekends, you could save money by requesting the Residential Time-of-Day Service.
  • This rate is available to residential customers, who choose to have their energy usage metered based upon on-peak and off-peak hours.
    • On-peak hours:  11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays
    • Off-peak hours:  all other hours

 

Shift and Save
With the Time-of-Day Rate, changing your schedule in a few small ways can translate into major savings. Simple ways to save under this plan include:

  • Wait to operate your dishwasher and laundry appliances until after 7 p.m.
  • Increase the temperature on your air conditioning.
  • Turn off lights, television and computer equipment when not in use – especially during on-peak hours!
  • Shower or bathe after 7 p.m. and before 11 a.m, if you have an electric water heater.

This rate offers you the opportunity to save up to 11 percent on the water heating portion of your bill by allowing us to temporarily interrupt electricity to your water heater for up to four hours per day. This short interruption helps DTE provide reliable service on days when the demand for electricity is high.

To participate, you must have a separately metered circuit to which no other load except water heating can be connected.

  • You will need to have a licensed electrician supply and install the necessary meter enclosure, an AC-10 box, wiring, and any other necessary equipment. You may also need to receive approval of inspection for the electrical  work from your city. Upon completion of the work, DTE will install a separate advanced meter and Load Control Device.
  • The cost to install the equipment necessary to separately meter the water  heater usage will be provided by your licensed electrician.
  • When your water heating wiring is complete, call us at 800.477.4747 so  we can schedule the installation of the advanced meter.
